The first installation of the E Ink Kaleido 3 Outdoor smart transit signage since its launch in April has been completed.

The project – which was undertaken by Mercury Innovations in Sydney, Australia – features 12 13.3″ smart transportation signs that are equipped with solar panels, providing a zero-emission digital display that optimises kerbside management.

E Ink Kaleido 3 Outdoor is based on print-colour ePaper technology and utilises an RGB colour filter array on black-and-white electronic paper film. Its operating temperature range is between -15C to 65C, which allows it to operate in extreme climates without the need for heating or cooling devices.

The product’s reflective nature means that the brighter the sun, the clearer the image appears. A simple front-light facilitates night viewing.

Enrique Esquivel, design director at Mercury Innovations, said: “This deployment marks another major step in our ongoing partnership with E Ink. Our years of experience in intelligent transportation systems and extensive networks across the transportation industry, coupled with E Ink’s leading ePaper displays, has enabled us to deliver significant road safety improvements, where drivers, riders and road authorities can respond dynamically to real-time changes.”

Timothy O’Malley, assistant vice-president for the US regional business unit at E Ink Corporation, said: “As energy costs come at a premium, ePaper products such as E Ink Kaleido 3 Outdoor are gaining momentum. Kaleido 3 Outdoor was developed to meet customers’ needs for more-sustainable signage that can function in a variety of weather conditions for smart transit and digital out-of-home advertising.”
