Porsche chips to use 16,000 LEDs to turn night into day

New HD Matrix lights will each incorporate two chips with the new technology which can illuminate the way ahead at a distance of up to 600 metres.

Porsche has developed a lighting innovation that combines more than 16,000 individually controllable micro-LEDs onto a surface the size of a thumbnail.

New cars will incorporate two chips with this technology into each headlight, enabling beams that turn night into day at a distance of up to 600 metres.

The car’s HD matrix lights will illuminate a 40-degree horizontal and ten-degree vertical range with a luminous flux of over 1,400 lumens.

“Because the HD matrix headlights only activate the pixels that are actually needed at any given moment, they consume considerably less energy [than] other high-resolution systems, while the amount of light remains the same,” says Hermann-Josef Stappen, a spokesperson for R&D and technology communications at Porsche.
